First and foremost, the search and discovery of truffles is made possible by the olfactory skills of the dog. By nature, every dog is born with a good sense of smell and uses this scent to discover the world around them. In theory, every dog is therefore capable of using this sense of smell to find truffles !

Once the hunting dogs of Roman aristocracy, they developed an impeccable ability to naturally detect the aromas of the truffle through centuries of discovery of the Italian woodlands.

Even though the Lagotto Romagnolo may be blessed in the art of the truffle hunt from birth, the education of any truffle hunting dog remains of the utmost importance… as their first reflex will be to indulge on the fruits of their labour! Just like us, our dogs are also unable to resist the delicious flavours and aromas of truffles !
For the past few years, l’Or des Valois has worked with two dogs, Elfe and Julio. We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Elfe, who adored truffle so much that she wouldn’t hesitate to hoard a few of her findings to enjoy when our backs were turned. She is survived by Julio, who has proven his aptitude and curiousity over the past few years.
